The Emily Schindler Memorial Scholarship Triathlon benefits the Emily Schindler Memorial Scholarship
which was set up in her memory.
Emily Schindler spent most of her life in the water. Joining the Severna Park Y (SPY) when she was
9 years old, she always put friendship above the competition of the sport. Emily exemplified team spirit
as a swimmer on the team for 9 years. Always encouraging others to remain positive, Emily brought a smile
to everyone around her. When she laughed, she laughed wholeheartedly, it was as if she had just heard
the funniest joke in the world. Her blond hair shining in the sunlight reminded you of an angel.
On a snow-covered road in Garrett co. Maryland in January 2004, Emily was
killed in a car accident. Immediately after her death her parents knew the
best way to honor her was to establish a scholarship in her name that would
be awarded annually to any graduating senior or past SPY swimmer that had
been on the team for at least one full year. At least one scholarship in the
amount of $1000 is awarded each year. To apply for the award, the applicant
must write an essay describing how swimming on the SPY team has affected
their life. Applicants are judged on their essay, an interview with members
of the selection committee, recommendations from the SPY coaches and need.
To date, over $12,000 has been awarded to 20 swimmers.

The Emily Schindler Memorial Scholarship Triathlon will take place on Saturday, April 12, 2008. The event takes
place in the indoor heated pool of SPY Aquatics and on the B&A Trail. After last year’s inaugural event, your
feedback was requested and many of the suggestions have been incorporated into this year’s event. The bike leg
will head north on the B&A trail, making the distance a little longer than last year and the run leg will head
south on the B&A trail, making the distance a little shorter. The swim leg is unchanged. Additional route
markers will be in place, but it is imperative that every participant (and spectator) cross all public streets
in the designated locations and obey directions from the traffic controllers supplied by Anne Arundel County.
Registration will open 30 minutes earlier for check-in and swim lane assignments. A pre-race meeting will also be
held the Thursday evening before the triathlon to answer any last minute questions. Your input is always welcome,
as we establish the tradition of a local triathlon that is intended to be fun and rewarding for all participants.
